Unable to create directory uploads

Unable to create directory uploads Directory

I have been on this error for days well nearly a week actually. I had bought 2 established sites and after a year of fiddling and headaches, they are finally hosted on our server.

We had updated the Themes to Genesis. As the old ones dated way back to the 2000’s prehistoric I might say hehe.

All going well and another problem surfaced up. We couldn’t load any Photos into posts always getting an error.(Unable to create directory uploads/2015/06. Is its parent directory writable by the server?), so I googled it and always come up as the permissions needed to be changed in my File Manager on my hosting account. days later still no good and by this stage, i was steaming out the ears.

Being me when I am presented with a challenge I don’t give up, yes I do get frustrated at times but it drives me always to succeed. The info on what other people had was really bad, I just couldn’t find a solution.

So I looked thoroughly on my word-press comparing our other dozen sites we have and guess what! Found something strange. In Media Setting Uploads it said /home/learn/public_htlm/wp-content/uploads. So I changed it to default wp-content/uploads saved this and tried well after nearly a full week of frying the brain literally I fixed the problem. Now I can upload anything as my other sites are doing.

Just another learning curve and I do hope people will learn and read about this so they have a better understanding what (Unable to create directory uploads/2015/06. Is its parent directory writable by the server?)

Until next time or next problem take care and hope u enjoy. thanks

SEO page Ranking Factors

February 8, 2014 by Bill Fiskilis Leave a Comment

SEO Page Ranking

SEO

Many on-page SEO ranking factors are related to the use of keywords. I’ll cover those first, and then cover some other factors that are not directly related to keywords.

Keywords in the Tag
Your page titles will show up in the SERPs, so make them concise and relevant.
You should use the TITLE element to identify the contents of a document. Since users often consult documents out of context, authors should provide context-rich titles. Thus, instead of a title such as “Introduction”, which doesn’t provide much contextual background, authors should supply a title such as “Introduction to WordPress” instead.

One of the most critical on-page SEO factors, the tags is not to be dismissed. Search engines tend to use the tags text as search results titles. All pages should have unique page titles. All page titles should be crafted wisely, using the most important keywords found in the page copy. The page title should contain specific keyword phrases to describe the page. Using a company name in the page title by itself can prove ineffective if it is not accompanied by additional text that briefly describes the product, service, or topic being discussed

Titles in search results

Titles in search results have a maximum length. A long title will not hurt your site, but it may not appear in its entirety in the search results. If you have to use longer page titles, from a usability perspective ensure that the part of the title that could show up in search results contains relevant keywords. The last thing you want is for your key- words to get cut off in the search results. Don’t be afraid to change your HTML page titles.
Pages using no titles or default titles as generated by various HTML programs are useless and can be detrimental to your site’s visibility.

Title keywords in the page copy

Titles need to be relevant to the page copy. You need to ensure that most, if not all, of the words found in the tag can also be found on the page itself. Of course, some pages will be exempt from this rule, but this should be the goal for any page.

Keywords in the Page URL

Keywords in a page URL are useful—and not just for SEO. Many of the newer CMSs, blog sites and news sites allow for URL rewriting techniques to make their URLs stand out by using keywords in the URLs.

Keywords in the Page Copy

When I talk about keywords in the page copy, I mean the number of times a particular keyword or keywords occur in the body of a document. Before optimizing your key- words, do the necessary research and figure out what people are searching for on the particular topic you are writing about.
Use tools such as Google AdWords to obtain keyword suggestions as well as to check what your competitors are using. You may want to target no more than two or three keywords per page.
High keyword densities may be viewed with more suspicion. Typically, keyword den- sities range between 0.2% and 4%. This does not mean your site will be penalized if your keyword density is 10%, nor does it mean your page will not rank if your keyword density is less than 0.2%.

Keywords in theDescription Tag

The text in the description tag is not visible on the page itself but is often displayed in search results. This should be enough of an imperative to fully optimize this tag. Here is the format of description tag:

Keywords in the Heading Tags

Make proper use of your H1 heading tags. Webmasters have used multiple H1 tags in the belief that search engines give those tags priority. The problem with this and similar techniques is that search engines are not stupid and will adapt very quickly to counterattack less scrupulous techniques such as this. Use H1 tags where and when they are appropriate.

Domain Name Keywords

If your domain name contains an exact (or partial) match to a search query, chances are it will show up on the first page of the SERPs—at least on Google. Google gives keyword matching domains preferential treatment.
The exception to this rule is for competitive keywords. However, the chances of a- quiring a popular keyword domain are minimal, as most, if not all, dictionary words are taken, in addition to the most popular two- or three-keyword phrase combinations. This has led to the recent popularity of nonsense words as business names. Note that the guidelines for subdomains are the same as for domains. The benefits of subdomains are multifold, but subdomains can also be viewed as search engine spam if you create too many of them. With subdomains, you can pick any name you like, as you are in control of the domain record.

With so many variables used in search engine rankings, optimizing for the most in- important ranking factors is paramount. Nobody has time to optimize for everything. Internal ranking factors are divided into two broad categories: on-page and on-site ranking factors.
On-page ranking factors are pertinent to each page. Many on-page ranking factors are related to keywords. This includes keywords in the title tags, the page URL, the description tags, and the HTML heading tags. Other on-page factors include the keyword proximity (and prominence), the link anchor keywords, the quality of outbound links, the page age, and the page size.
On-site ranking factors affect the entire site. These factors include the domain name keywords, the size or quantity of content, the linking architecture, and the page freshness…. To be continued…..

PhilippinesPhilippines

My first trip to the Philippines was back in 2010, I’ve always had the traveling bug and wanted to explore new cultures. My trip was based on what I heard about the Philippines .

We had a Filipina working in our shop in Bendigo her name was Marietta. She was married to mom and dad’s best friend Kevin.

You can read all my experiences about the Philippines by visiting this Link. Which will take you to our PhilippinesGetaway site? Or watch some videos we have produced on one our sites.

SEO Analysing SERPs

February 7, 2014 by Bill Fiskilis Leave a Comment

SEO Analysing SERPsThe abundance of myths, speculations, and theories in the SEO community makes it hard to focus on what’s really relevant when it comes to ranking in the SERPs. To quantify the importance of different ranking factors, my Perl script analyzes and proves some of the theories.

The basic idea is to analyze the top results from the top search engines. Given a search term, the script collects the results from the major search engines, downloads those pages, and analyzes them to see why they got the rankings they did.

SEO Internal Ranking Factors

February 7, 2014 by Bill Fiskilis Leave a Comment

SEO Internal RankingInternal ranking factors are things you control directly as part of your site that can affect your rank in the SERPs. There are two types of internal ranking factors: on-page ranking factors (things you can do in a particular web page, such as providing appro- priate keywords) and on-site ranking factors (things you can do to your website as a whole).
How can you take into consideration hundreds of different ranking factors? You can’t. The key is to home in on 20 or so of the most important known factors—those that have stood the test of time and produced results consistently. Knowing what to opti- mize can make SEO a lot easier. Instead of listening to Internet hype, website owners should rely on provable facts.

Melbourne St Kilda

February 7, 2014 by Bill Fiskilis Leave a Comment

Melbourne St kildaI grew up in St Kilda, Melbourne we lived there till the 80’s. What was St Kilda like well it was totally different. Rough, fast and chaos I was only young and grew up in one of the roughest area around Melbourne. My parents had a mini supermarket in fitzroy st across the road from all the high rise apartment/ commission complex, me and my younger brother and sister seen alot of things that you’d wish young children would never experience. From stabbings to shootings it was ful on back in the early 80’s. Bojangles night club was the roughest area lucky we were too young to mingle there.
Luna Park was a 5 min drive away and dad use to take us down every now and then, st Kilda beach was a beautiful place to play and fish also.
We attendant the St Kilda Primary school a historicle landmark it was only 1 block away from were we use to live above mum and dad’s business. I drove down to Melbourne a few weeks ago and by golly  things have changed for the better.  St Kilda is a mega tourist place now, eateries everywhere the beach cleaner. It bought a few good memories back when we use to live here 25 odd yeas ago. My god time flys.. To be continued……

Web Hosting and Domain registration

January 6, 2014 by Bill Fiskilis Leave a Comment

Web Hosting and Domain registrationWeb Hosting refers to services that provide space for users to store their website content. Or Website information such as images, video, or any other content accessible through the Web  that needs to be stored on a computer server located in a secure and climate controlled environment that is permanently connected to the internet through high speed data lines. This server space is referred to as Web Hosting.
Without somewhere to host a website, there is no website. Web hosting allows users to store their website contents in a safe managed space.

Obtaining Hosting.
Web hosting is often provided as part of a general Internet access plan; there are many free and paid providers offering these types of web hosting. I use godaddy and have found them good for what my needs are.
A customer needs to evaluate the requirements of the application to choose what kind of hosting to use. Such considerations include database server software, scripting software, and Operating system.

Most hosting providers provide Linux-based web hosting which offers a wide range of different software. The web hosting client may want to have other services, such as email for their business domain, databases or multimedia services. A customer may also choose Windows as the hosting platform. There are a lot of Web hosting packages often include a
Web Content Management System, so the end-user does not have to worry about the more technical aspects.

Domain Name Registrations.
Before you can setup a presence on the internet, you need an easy way for people to find you.
This is done by registering and using your own domain name. Be careful – There are certain things to look out for when registering a domain name! even though it is relatively cheap, a domain name can become very valuable once your business grows, so put the correct emphasis on it now!
Once you’ve registered your domain and your site is up and running. It is something you generally forget about when it is working…even though it may be registered incorrectly.

Email Accounts.
Far too often businesses use a generic email address from one of the free providers out there. This is fine for personal email, but for a business it’s not good enough!
And the funny thing is, the proper email address wouldn’t cost a cent more than is already being paid.  Because the domain name is already registered and their website is also already active using their Website Hosting package, so why not take advantage of this.

Living in Greece part 1

January 5, 2014 by Bill Fiskilis Leave a Comment

Living in GreeceWe were of on a normal holiday as a family, mum, dad and 3 children this time it was different. We ended up staying for 4 whole years opposed to the 3 month stays we use to have.

Being only young 12yrs old I was excited, we attendant schooling in Patra were we lived, me parents had a few dramas enroll ing us in school being Australians we weren’t allowed to do schooling unless me parents made as duel citizens. This sounded all good and was easy but dramas started later on in live with national service.

Schooling was great there it only consisted of 4 hours a day in the late arvo, sport was huge there also, I competed in javelin, shot put, hurdles, swimming, long pole, sprint which I was no good at at marathon running which suited me better distances over 10km up to 40km. Not like here in Australia were sport is pretty basic in Greece sport was huge to participate and compete, schooling was great also even tho it was 4 hours a day it was advanced schooling as when we returned to Australia I missed a year 7 and went to year 8 straight up. I thought wow that’s great.

Staying in Singapore

January 5, 2014 by Bill Fiskilis Leave a Comment

Staying in SingaporeVery humid place like always we use to frequent Singapore en route to Europe every few years this time in the late 80’s while still young we staying for 2 weeks at the Merchant Court (Swisotel) on Clarke Quaay, the pool area is amazing and location excellent.

A very nice place to visit plenty of attractions and history close by

Singapore National Museum
There are always interesting international exhibitions going on, with a small section bringing the traveling exhibition to a local context. In the exhibition on treasures from Ukraine, there is a bit at the end describing the importance of gold in Asian cultures as well. A great place to hide from the humid weather also.

Singapore Zoo
A marvelous place when we visited. I recall many innovative designs in terms of how the space was laid out. There are very few ‘cages’ and you often look down on the dangerous animals in a way that seems like you are right there. Elephant rides were a real treat and I also remember an exotic bird literally sitting on a tree in the middle of the pedestrian path. Ground-breaking stuff. A beautiful place.

I always travel to the Philippines the last few years via Singapore I like the new airport Changai Aiport, maybe in the near future will stay for a week or 2 now as I’ve grown up abit, can get around and visit places of interest as back in the 80’s we were only children.
